Ever notice how everybody talks about self-care until it’s time to actually set a boundary? Suddenly you’re “too much,” “too unavailable,” or “acting brand new.” But truth be told, even Jesus took time away from the crowd to rest and reset, and if the Son of God needed space, so do we.
“Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed.” -Mark 1:35
This verse shows Jesus setting boundaries, stepping away from people and noise to recharge and connect with God. It’s the perfect tie-in for healthy spiritual self-care.
Some of us are out here trying to save the world before our second cup of coffee. We’re praying for peace but letting every text, drama, and emotional fire alarm interrupt our day. Real talk: you can’t pour from an empty mug.
Boundaries don’t mean you’re cold, they mean you finally love yourself enough to protect your peace. It’s not about shutting people out; it’s about making room for what God actually called you to do. And half the time, the things we feel “guilty” saying no to are the very things keeping us from growing.
So yes, drink the coffee, pray the prayer, and send the text that says, “I can’t today.” You’re not lazy. You’re not selfish. You’re guarding the temple God gave you, and that’s holy work.
3 Faith-Based Ways to Protect Your Peace
1. Schedule your “Jesus time” like an appointment, and don’t cancel on Him.
Stop treating prayer time like that gym membership you “swear” you’ll use. Make it daily. Make it sacred. Make it caffeine-assisted if needed.
2. Stop apologizing for your “no.” You can love people and protect your sanity. “No” doesn’t make you mean, it makes you mature. Bonus: it’s two letters shorter than “sure, I’ll do it.”
3. Ask before you say yes: “Did God actually sign me up for this? "If it doesn’t align with what He called you to do, it’s probably just noise. Not every opportunity is a divine assignment, sometimes it’s just a distraction dressed in good intentions.
